Matt Newing has shown an entrepreneurial spirit and a proclivity for business from a young age, founding his first business, a security company, when he was just 23 years old. In 1996, Newing made his first move into the tech industry, with a business idea to rent out memorable free phone numbers to big companies and profit from the phone calls. Needing support to turn this dream into a reality, Newing got in touch with The Prince’s Trust. After taking part in an Enterprise programme, the Trust decided to invest in Matt’s business concept, offering him a £1,000 grant to get started.
Since then, Matt has gone from strength to strength, evaluating and procuring businesses that he can nurture and grow. Now the head of a diverse portfolio of companies, including IT and communications, property, data and the secondary ticket market – as well as minority and majority stakes in various public and private sector businesses, Matt has an excellent track record for building national and international companies in line with his growth and acquisition strategy.
In 2000, Matt Newing founded Elite Group, which started life as a small telecoms company. From these humble origins, Matt has organically grown the company from the ground up through acquisitions, teamwork, and pure business savvy, transforming Elite Group into one of the UK’s leading unified communications and IT service providers. The company now employs over 165 people, and recently completed its biggest deal to date after purchasing Nexus Telecommunications, nearly doubling its estimated revenues in the process.
Matt’s motto, in his professional and personal life, is “play to win”. In business, this means providing high-quality, innovative products and services with a customer-driven approach. As such, in all his business endeavours, Matt’s aim is to find new ways to add value for his clients. This ambition is the driving force behind every innovation, acquisition, and expansion Matt undertakes, not just in Elite Group, but across his entire business portfolio.
Outside of work, Matt is a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, enjoying the outdoor pursuits that life on the Isle of Man has to offer. Beyond this, Matt firmly believes in giving back to the local community, ensuring that charity work is ingrained in both the Elite Group culture and his personal life. Matt is a passionate supporter of educational charities both on the Isle of Man and further afield in Ethiopia. He was one of the founding members of the Manx Educational Foundation, an education initiative based on the Isle of Man. Matt’s charitable contributions have also helped to build seven schools in Ethiopia, which now educate more than 2,000 children a year and provide the community with clean water and toilet facilities.
Never forgetting his humble beginnings and the support he received when first starting out in business, Matt has been an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust since 2013, donating over £60,000 to help young people across the North West of England transform their lives by gaining new skills and self-confidence.
